The U.S. military says the sensor from the first suspected Chinese spy balloon shot down in the U.S. has been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean.

US Northern Command said search crews "recovered significant debris from the site, including all priority sensor and electronics pieces identified".

The FBI is examining the items, which the US says were used to spy on sensitive military sites.

The US has shot down three more objects since the first on February 4.

A "large portion of the structure" was recovered off the coast of South Carolina on Monday, military officials said.

According to the BBC's US partner CBS, the balloon's antennae are among the items found about 30–40 feet (9–12 m).

US officials said the high-altitude balloon originated in China and was used for surveillance, but China said it was merely a weather observation plane that went astray.

Since that first incident, American fighter jets have shot down three more high-altitude objects - in Alaska, Canada's Yukon Territory, and Lake Huron on the US-Canada border.

In the Lake Huron attack, the first Sidewinder missile fired by a US F-16 fighter jet missed its target and exploded at an unknown location, US media reported, citing military sources.

The second missile hits the target. Each Sidewinder missile costs more than $400,000 (£330,000).

Officials said the slow-moving unidentified objects, all of which are smaller than the first balloon, could be difficult for military pilots to spot.

The other three objects were shot down "out of an abundance of caution," White House spokesman John Kirby said Monday.

They posed "no direct threat to people on the ground", but were destroyed "to protect our safety, our interests and the safety of aircraft".

Officials described the balloon that crashed over South Carolina as the size of three buses.

The second object, over Alaska, was described as the size of a "small car". The third object over the Yukon was "cylindrical". And the fourth, above Michigan, was called "octagonal" with strings attached.

A Pentagon memo later reported in the US media that the object shot down over the Yukon appeared to be a "small, metallic balloon with a tethered payload underneath".

Defense officials also wrote in the memo that the object shot down in Michigan "subsequently descended slowly into the water" after impact.

The recovery of the balloon launched on February 4 was delayed by bad weather.

Efforts are underway to collect debris from other objects that have flown into the sky.

Canada's Federal Police Force said Monday that the search area in the Yukon Territory was about 3,000 square km (1,870 square miles), including "rugged mountain terrain with very high levels of snowpack."

Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman Sean McGillis said there is a possibility that the pieces from the Yukon and Lake Huron incidents may never be recovered due to their remote locations.

Canadian Armed Forces Major-General Paul Prevost said the three most recent objects to be shot down appeared to be "lighter-than-air" machines and described the Lake Huron object as "a suspicious balloon".

The military chief added that any members of the public who discovered the debris should contact the police directly.
