In a sport notorious for offering very few guarantees, it still seems fair to bet Spain's Jon Rahm is destined for golfing greatness.

With his thrilling victory at the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles, the 28-year-old claimed his 10th PGA Tour victory to move past his late great compatriot Severiano Ballesteros.

Of course, at times Ballesteros had little chance of success on the American circuit, but Rahm's current rate of progress is staggering and even compares to 15-time major winner Tiger Woods.

"He's a spectacular golfer," said Max Homma after being beaten into second place by the Basque golfer at the famous Riviera last Sunday.

"I'd say other than Tiger, he's the most consistent player I've ever seen. I've known him since college and he's been like that ever since, No. 1 amateur in the world, No. 1 player in the world, all accolades."

It was Rahm's fifth win in his last nine starts. His third win from his last half-dozen events. He alone has banked nearly $10 million in prize money in 2023 and is currently under 93 years old.

The revised world rankings are in flux but there is no arguing with Rory McIlroy and then Scotty Scheffler returning to the top of the tree - whose reign was capped at one week after his win in Phoenix.

"The guy is incredible," Homa added. "Rory, John and Scotty are kind of in a league of their own at times and it's our job to catch them."

Rahm was upset late last year when his victory in November at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, his second in three weeks, failed to climb from world number five.

The man who's back at the top of the standings knows exactly what he's getting into right now.

"I don't need a ranking to tell me — to validate anything," he said.

In comparison to Woods - who won 39 PGA Tour events, including 30 majors, when he turned 28 on December 30, 2003 - the thoughtful Rahm again knows where he sits in the pecking order.

"How many times did he do that at 28?" Rahm observed. "It's absolutely incredible.

"I've been able to match a very small aspect of it and hopefully I can do a lot of great things this year to put my name up to it.

"But the fact that he's been able to do that over the years, with swing changes and golf style changes, is pretty remarkable.

"I've admired and admired Tiger for a long time, but it took me six years to get to this point as a professional."

Rahm's big challenge is to turn this anarchic form into a big win. Again, very few guarantees, but Riviera is a pretty reliable indicator for the biggest events, especially the Masters, with its demanding design, firm greens and field quality.

Four of the top 10 at the L.A. layout last year finished in the top eight at Augusta a few months later, including winner Scheffler and runner-up McIlroy.

Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Mike Weir can all sit down at Scheffler's Augusta Champions Dinner during Masters week and discuss Rivera's victory.

With a major to his name — the 2021 U.S. Open — Rahm will inevitably feel the weight of expectation during four major career-defining tournaments, starting with the Masters in April.

He is reaping the rewards of incremental improvement that made him statistically the best in approach play in California last week, as well as in the top ten for driving and putting.

"I've been extremely disciplined my whole career, but right now I'm seeing the dividends of a lot of hard work," Rahm said.

And he is set to relish rivalries with European Ryder Cup teammate McIlroy and rival Scheffler. "That's the beauty of the age we're living in now," he laughs. "It's exciting for us to play and exciting for golf fans."

There can be little doubt that the PGA Tour has had a spectacular start to the year with so many prominent names. Rahm was sensational down the stretch Sunday night, including a memorable close hole with an 8-iron on the 16th.

The Saudi Arabian-funded LIV circuit begins its second season in Mexico this week, and despite its huge investment, it needs to establish a niche product (team or otherwise) to emerge from the shadows.

LIV is expected to announce Belgium's Thomas Pieters (a notable loss on the DP World Tour), Kiwi Danny Lee and US tourer Brendan Steele as new recruits.

Victor Hovland has also been indulged and recently said "nothing is ruled out". This will cause turmoil among PGA Tour and European Tour bosses as the Norwegian is an outstanding talent.

Still, they must be glad to have Rahm as a committed member of the status quo. As the man of the moment said: "I'm having the best season of my life and hopefully I can keep it going."
