No England batsman has scored four Test centuries faster than Brooke's nine innings. Root needed 34 innings to score his first four centuries for the record.
Where Brook usually upsets Gilbert Jessop's 121-year-old record for England's fastest Test century, made off 76 balls, he is now knocking on the doors of Herbert Sutcliffe and Everton Weekes.
England's Sutcliffe and West Indian Wickes both reached 1,000 Test runs in 12 innings, the fastest ever. Sutcliffe did it in 1925, Weeks in 1949. Brook, 193 short of that landmark, have this innings left and two or three more matches to beat.
He averaged 100.88 tonight, better than the greatest of them all, Donald Bradman. Even with Saturday's first-ball dismissal, that would drop to just 89.67, the second-highest by any player in a Test innings or more.
"I'm sure it will come down very quickly," he said. "I'm just trying to enjoy the moment and live in what's happening right now.
"These are good times but bad times can be right around the corner so you have to enjoy these moments and cash in as much as I can."
These are words that reveal a lot about Brooke's down-to-earth character. Sunrisers Hyderabad may have won the IPL bidding war, making him a millionaire, but those who know him say he doesn't have a flash bone in his body.
